The Minister for Education, Mr Martin, has commended the University of Limerick and its retiring president, Dr Edward Walsh, for "extraordinary vision and leadership" over the past 25 years. Speaking at weekend functions marking the university's 25th anniversary, he commented on its remarkable growth, from 100 students in 1972 to more than 9,400 this year.

The Minister said the university had pioneered a number of projects, including direct job placements in business and industry. It had already confirmed its place among the leading institutions in the State, with an enviable reputation for teaching, research and community service.

He spoke of the university "uniquely forming the academic heart of the national technological park". Dr Walsh, who is stepping down as president, said: "Having made our mark nationally, we are now poised to do so internationally, guided by the Vision 2020 plan drawn up by the campus community."
