The Milan stock market said today it was suspending after-hours trading following the crash of a small plane into a tower in the city .
Reports of a plane crashing into a Milan skyscraper sent a chill wind through European markets, already hit hard by a weak outlook from Finland's Nokia , and extended losses as investors recalled the events of September 11th.
At 5.25 p.m. with most markets closed, the FTSE Eurotop 300 index of pan-European blue chips fell 0.75 per cent and the narrower DJ Euro Stoxx index fell 1.22 per cent.
The German Dax index slumped 1.44 per cent.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average index slipped 0.86 per cent higher while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell one percent.
The DJ Stoxx technology index shed six percent - almost retracing all of its rebound in the past week - as Nokia's warning sent other telecom gear suppliers tumbling.
