Middlesbrough today pulled out of their bid to sign Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke.

Boro had been in talks with the 30-year-old player for several days after agreeing a Stg£6.2million fee with the Old Trafford club.

But as speculation mounted that the Trinidad and Tobago international's personal terms were far in excess of what the Teessiders were prepared to pay, manager Steve McClaren today pulled the plug on the deal.

"The two clubs agreed a fee and United gave us permission to talk to Dwight," said a club spokesman.

"Unfortunately, it would appear the offer did not meet Dwight's aspirations. The club has therefore withdrawn its bid.

"The search for good players to boost the team remains the manager's number one priority."
