An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the AIB bank in Mayfield, Cork, yesterday morning when two men wielding knives threatened staff. The raiders, who were wearing balaclavas, escaped on a mountain bike, but gardai later caught one of them.

Last Friday, another AIB branch bank - at Glanmire, on the eastern suburbs of the city - was raided and Garda sources said they had not dismissed the possibility that both crimes might have been connected.
