GAA:Michael Meehan has been named the new Galway football captain ahead of this year's All-Ireland Championship but will not play any part in Sunday's Connacht SFC preliminary match against New York.

Meehan is still not match fit after injuring his knew during the National League game against Kerry. Manager Joe Kernan has called upon vice-captain Joe Bergin to lead the Tribesmen in Sunday’s game. Meehan is expected to be available for selection within four weeks.

Kernan will give championship debuts to goalkeeper Eoin O’Conghaile and right corner forward Eoin Concannon.

Galway talisman Padraic Joyce is still on the comeback from an Achilles operation and is doubtful to feature in Sunday’s game at the Gaelic Grounds in New York where throw-in is 9pm Irish time.
