The Green Party MEP, Ms Patricia McKenna, has warned that the atrocities in New York and Washington should not be used as an excuse for threatening the civil liberties and basic rights of ordinary citizens.
The "far-reaching" anti-terrorism legislation being introduced, as agreed by EU justice ministers, was unlikely to be debated in the Dβil or any other national parliament, she said, urging the Minister for Justice not to join the rush to approve it.
