Brian "Beano" McDonald is back in the Laois team for tomorrow's All-Ireland football quarter-final against Armagh, which has a 3.30 start in Croke Park.

McDonald had lost his place for the fourth round qualifier against Derry, but then came on at half-time to replace the injury-restricted Chris Conway - a move which manager Mick O'Dwyer admitted proved highly effective on the day.

With Conway still suffering from the lingering effects of that thigh strain injury, McDonald was always the most likely replacement - his fielding and breaking of the ball proving vital in the final quarter of the last game.

But there are other changes from the side which beat Derry by three points a fortnight ago, with team captain Kevin Fitzpatrick dropping down to the bench while Stephen Kelly gets his chance at full forward.

Fitzpatrick was clearly struggling with his form in the Derry match, and also ended up being replaced at half-time by Kelly, who contributed a fine point and like McDonald, played a major role in turning the game in Laois' favour.

With Kelly named at full forward, Billy Sheehan moves to centre forward.

Barry Brennan also returns to the starting line-up, having been forced to withdraw just before throw-in the last day because of a hamstring problem, with his replacement on the day - Shane Cooke - starting on the bench this time.

Opponents Armagh have made just one change from the team which beat Tyrone in the replayed Ulster final on July 23rd. Martin O'Rourke is called into the starting line-up and will play at right wing forward. As a result, Ciaran McKeever moves back into the half-back line - and Aidan O'Rourke is the player to lose out.

McKeever was one of the Armagh players originally suspended for four weeks, along with Paul McGrane, following the investigations of the Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) into the Ulster final - but both were cleared by the GAA's Central Council after the technical and legal points which emerged from the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) investigation of the case involving Tyrone's Ryan McMenamin.

Tomorrow's game marks only the second championship meeting between the teams, and a repeat of their quarter-final clash two years ago when Laois, the then Leinster champions, were beaten by an Armagh team coming through the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the long-running saga involving Dublin footballer Mark Vaughan should come closer to a conclusion today when the Central Appeals Committee (CAC) announce their decision regarding an appeal of the Dublin County Board. Last month, the Leinster Council upheld an appeal from St Brigid's into the eligibility of Vaughan, who had played for Kilmacud Crokes against St Brigid's in the Dublin championship first round back on May 20th.

As a result of the Leinster Council decision the Blanchardstown club were awarded the game. However, the Dublin board then appealed that decision back to the CAC, who met on Wednesday night and are due to inform the two clubs of their decision today.

But it's now likely the issue will end up back with the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA), whose original decision gave Vaughan the go-ahead to play in the fixture before the GAA rule book was found to be flawed in its inaccurate incorporation of a motion passed at the 1996 Annual Congress.

Finally, the immediate future of the Meath football management will be decided at Monday night's meeting of the county board, where eight names will go forward for the selection phase. Carlow manager Liam Hayes was among those added to the final nominations, as was Mattie Kerrigan, who previously managed Westmeath and Cavan.

Completing the list of potential contenders along with Séan Boylan (who may end up in his 24th year as manager) aare Eamonn Barry, Gerry McEntee, Colm Coyle, Eamonn McEneaney and Benny Reddy.

Boylan, however, has been completely tight-lipped on the matter since Meath suffered defeat at the hands of Cavan in the third round of the all-Ireland qualifiers in Clones five weeks ago.
