The 180-year-old sheriff's gold chain which has been traditionally worn by mayors of Limerick in preference to the heavier ceremonial chain is missing and gardai were yesterday called in to try to find it.

Before leaving last weekend for Spokane, Washington, which is twinned with Limerick, the Mayor, Mr Jack Bourke, reported that he could not locate the chain.
