Maxine Carr, the woman who lied to protect the murderer of two British schoolgirls, will be freed tomorrow, despite the theft of sensitive papers about her release.

Carr has become a hate figure since the murders in 2002 of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. The risk of her being attacked by members of the public is deemed so high that she is being given a new identity in a secret location.

The papers were stolen from a car belonging to a Home Office official on Tuesday and recovered a few hours later.

But the chief executive of the National Offender Management Service said while it was "unfortunate" the documents had gone missing they had not compromised Carr's plans.

"Nothing in those documents related to Miss Carr's new identity," Martin Neary told BBC radio.    "It is disappointing that we lost some documents, but I don't think it is a dreadful business.

"Meticulous arrangements have been made for Miss Carr's release, they have gone ahead exactly as planned."

A spokeswoman said an injunction had also been granted at London's High Court to prevent her future address being published citing concerns to her health, safety and the ability of the Probation Service and other agencies to supervise her.

For weeks, British newspapers have speculated on Carr's new identity, saying she may be forced to start a new life abroad in Australia or Canada after serving half of a three-and-a-half year sentence for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

While in prison Carr has been kept away from other prisoners. Newspapers have showed photographs of Carr's fellow inmates holding placards from inside their prison cells calling her "evil" and saying she should hang.

Authorities say they will not comment on press reports Carr has been given plastic surgery or that her new identity will cost upwards of one million pounds to maintain.

Carr, 27, was found guilty last December of conspiring to pervert justice. Her former boyfriend Ian Huntley got two life sentences for the murders.
