BRITAIN: Maxine Carr will be freed from prison tomorrow after serving half a sentence for obstructing police investigating the Soham schoolgirls' murders, the government said yesterday.

The 27-year-old former fiancee of Soham murderer Ian Huntley - described by her lawyer as the "most vilified woman in England" - was moved from jail in Derby to an undisclosed location ahead of her release.

"Earlier today Maxine Carr was transferred . . . to a new location," a Home Office spokeswoman said. "Until Friday, she will remain the responsibility of the Prison Service."

The Home Office said documents relating to Carr were stolen from a civil servant's car in north London on Tuesday.

However, police refused to confirm reports those papers outlined details of her secret new identity and the location of her new home.

Details of Carr's release have been closely guarded for fear of revenge attacks over her role in the Soham case.

Carr has served half of a three-year term for lying to police investigating the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002.

Her former lover Huntley was jailed for life for the murder of the 10-year-old schoolgirls after one of the most high-profile trials at the Old Bailey court in recent criminal history.

Government sources last week denied reports Carr would start a new life in Australia or return to her native Grimsby, where there is still public anger about her case.
