Alternatives put forward by publicans to the imminent ban on smoking in the work place are not feasible, the Minister for Health said today.

Speaking following the launch of a national campaign to assist people to give up cigarettes Mr Martin said the proposal that pubs with fewer than five members of staff be exempt from the ban was not acceptable.

A second proposal from vintners that larger pubs provide a smoking free area of 50 per cent of their floor space was also rejected by the Minister.

Mr Martin said he was willing to discuss publicans' concern over the implementation of the new legislation and added that international evidence does not support fears of a downturn in profitability for licenced premises.
