Roberto Mancini has been appointed new coach to Italian first division side Fiorentina, the club's vice-president Mario Sconcerti announced this evening.

Mancini was named just hours after his Turkish predecessor Fatih Terim had resigned after a weekend when the Florence club had made no effort to conceal that they were targeting Mancini.

Fiorentina's new coach had assisted Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio earlier this season but had most recently played on loan in England with Leicester City.

Earlier Monday, Azeglio Vicini, president of Italy's Association of Football Coaches, had said Mancini could not coach Fiorentina this season because he had been registered with Lazio but Sconcerti's announcement now seems to have settled the matter. - AFP
