A 36-year-old man was recovering in hospital yesterday after being shot in the left hand in the Taughmonagh area of south Belfast on Wednesday night. Police are still investigating a motive for the assault, which bears the hallmarks of a "punishment" attack.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has accused the RUC of doing nothing to prevent sectarian attacks on Catholic homes in the Malone and Finaghy and Lisburn Road areas of south Belfast.
