A judge heard yesterday how a man had to be shackled hand and foot to a hospital bed by gardai.

He had been taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe after gardai found him slumped over the wheel of a stolen car which was imbedded in a concrete wall.

When brought to the hospital on August 6th, Darren Murphy (19), of Brackernagh, Ballinasloe, kicked a nurse in the stomach and assaulted two gardai.

His solicitor pleaded for leniency yesterday, saying his client had an allergic reaction to drink on the occasion.

Murphy admitted charges of assault, stealing a car, refusing to give a blood sample, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and causing over £3,000 damage to the car.

Judge O'Sullivan remanded him in custody for a week but later agreed to release him for a fortnight following a plea from his mother.
