A 25-year-old Galway man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of his girlfriend last weekend.

Patrick Hogan, 12a Fr Griffin Avenue, Galway, is charged with the murder of Karen Guinee (23) at their apartment between 9pm on Saturday, and 6.48am yesterday.

Ms Guinee, a medical graduate and native of Cork, would have been 24 next Sunday.

Detective Sergeant Willie Byrne told a special sitting of Galway District Court this morning that when charged with his girlfriend's murder at 10pm last night, the accused man replied "I'm sorry."

Inspector Tony O'Donnell applied to the court to have the accused remanded in custody to next Friday's remand court at Harristown, Castlerea.

Mr John Kiely, BL, defending, said he would be making an application for bail to the High Court next Monday. Judge Mary Fahy remanded the accused in custody to appear before Harristown Remand Court on Friday morning, June 16th.
