A Co Down man appeared in court yesterday charged with stabbing his partner to death in their Bangor flat last Monday.

Mr David Jones (36) was charged with murdering Ms Pauline McConnell (41) when he appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates' Court.

The body of Ms McConnell was found by police with a single stab wound to the chest in the couple's ground-floor flat at Lismore Avenue, Bangor, in the early hours of Monday.

The court heard that Mr Jones, an unemployed man, called police to the scene.

Det Sgt Gary Reid told the court that when initially cautioned, Mr Jones had replied: "It wasn't meant for her, it was meant for me." The officer said Mr Jones was interviewed more than 10 times over three days and was co-operative.

He said that when charged last night Mr Jones made no reply, but the detective said he believed he could connect him with the offence.
