A 57-year-old man has been rescued alive after spending 13 days beneath rubble in the Iranian city of  Bam, which was hit by an earthquake on December 26th, state radio reported today.

The radio report said the man was found by a search and rescue team last night and taken to a field hospital in the city.

The man was unable to speak, the radio said.

Last Saturday, Iranian rescue workers pulled a woman, believed to be in her nineties, alive and apparently unscathed, from the ruins of Bam.

At least 30,000 people were killed by the earthquake in Bam, an ancient Silk Road city in southeastern Iran; 90 per cent of its buildings were also ruined.
