An 18-year-old Dublin man who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident while "high on cannabis" was jailed for three months and banned from driving for 20 years at the Tallaght District Court in Dublin yesterday.

Myles Stokes, of Kylemore Grove, Ballyfermot, was "high", the court was told, when his car hit Mrs Dolores Reay (52), of Belgard Heights, Belgard Road, Tallaght, in December 1998.

The dead woman's husband, John, approached the witness box before the hearing began and asked Stokes if he was sorry.

He nodded.

Stokes was convicted on a total of four charges relating to the accident and also on a charge of having cannabis.

He was sentenced to six months in jail, which was reduced to three months on condition that he keep the peace for three years.
