A man has been jailed for a year for the sexual abuse of a child in his butcher’s shop over a three-year period during the 1970s. Dominic Downey (64), Moycullen, was found guilty by a jury at Galway Circuit Criminal Court in last month following a three-day trial. He was remanded in custody until sentence.

Downey had denied six sample charges of indecently assaulting the girl when she was aged between 12 and 15 between July 1973 and July 1975 at his shop on the Spiddal Road, Moycullen. The jury convicted him of three of the charges.
