A man who appeared in court smelling strongly of drink and told the judge that he was not "the whole of the law" has been jailed for seven days for contempt of court.

Noel Boles, of Foxrock Ave Dublin, had thrown a cigarette on the carpet the back of Swords District(Court, but he denied that he was drunk. However, when he called to the witness stand, he slurred the oath and Judge Sean Delap said he could smell alcohol from where he was sitting. "We do not live in a police state," said Boles.

When Judge Delap mentioned driving licences, Boles, who had been disqualified nine said "I did nothing.

You convicted me, but it took gardai to remove Boles from the witness stand.
