A 22-year-old man has been jailed for two years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for assaulting a teenage woman who refused to have sex with him.

Jason Byrne, from Rathvale Park, Ballymun, had drinks with the woman in two pubs before he assaulted her near the graveyard at Poppintree. He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault against the woman on October 15th, 1999.

Byrne, with four previous convictions for criminal damage and larceny, returned to live in Ballymun in July 1999, having worked for two years as a chef in England.

Judge Elizabeth Dunne refused leave to appeal the sentence.
