A 26-year-old man was in a stable condition in hospital last night following a shooting near the Co Limerick village of Ahane.

The victim was targeted at 11.30am at the level crossings in the village on the main Limerick to Newport road.

It is understood he had travelled to the area by arrangement by car but was on foot when he was confronted by a man armed with a shotgun.

The victim attempted to flee the scene and he was running away when a single shot was discharged.

Two men, aged in their mid 30s and mid 20s, were arrested shortly after the shooting at a house in the Castletroy area of Limerick city.
