A man in his 40s was taken to hospital in Co Louth last night after being rescued from a fire in a Dundalk apartment block.

The fire broke out in the Carroll Village apartments, in the centre of the town, at about 10.45pm.

A number of units from Dundalk Fire Brigade attended the scene and all the residents of the complex, which contains some 60 apartments, were evacuated while the fire was extinguished.

The man in his 40s was rescued from a second floor apartment by a fire crew.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for treatment. His injuries were not said to be life threatening.

A spokesman for Dundalk Fire Brigade said one apartment was badly damaged in the fire and that a number of adjacent units had sustained smoke and heat damage.

He said the complex was ventilated and the majority of residents returned to their homes by 1.45am. A number of those living in apartments damaged by the fire were housed elsewhere for the night, he added.

A Garda spokeswoman said the circumstances that led to the fire were being investigated.
