Gardaí in Co Monaghan have arrested a man after a shooting incident in the village of Glaslough on Thursday night.
Gardaí were called to a domestic dispute at 11 p.m. on Thursday between a father and daughter.
When gardaí arrived at the house, one of them approached the door but a man armed with a shotgun began firing at them from a window. Although none of the gardaí were hit, their patrol car was badly damaged.
An armed Garda response unit was called and shortly afterwards a man was arrested and a firearm confiscated.
A search of the house un- covered several licensed firearms which were taken away by gardaí for forensic analysis.
The man is being held at Monaghan Garda station under Section 30 and can be held for up to 48 hours before being either charged or released.
Garda Insp Pat McMorrow said: "On arriving at the house one of our members was confronted by a male person brandishing a gun out the window of the premises.
"He was threatening and shots were fired in the direction of our members but all of them struck the patrol car. Fortunately the member avoided injury and took cover.
"Assistance was summoned, including armed personnel, and they managed to overpower the person with the firearm and he was taken into custody. The full circumstances of this incident are now being thoroughly investigated".
