English police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of an Irishman found with serious gunshot wounds in a street.

Fergus Murray (30) of Blundell Avenue, Cleethorpes was found with gunshot wounds to his leg on Oxford Street in Grimsby, northeast England in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He died later from his injuries.

Today, detectives arrested a 28-year-old Grimsby man on suspicion of the murder and have also recovered a small black sports car that was seen to speed away from the scene where the man was found.

Detective Superintendent Raymond Higgins, who is leading the investigation, said: "This was an horrific attack. I have to reiterate that this kind of crime is uncommon in our area making it more important to bring to justice the person or persons behind it.

"I urge anyone with information to contact the police at the earliest opportunity."

Mr Murray is Irish-born, but is believed to have lived in the UK for a number of years.
