A 28-year-old man was being questioned last night by gardaí following the discovery of a body in an apartment in Drogheda.
The victim, also a 28-year-old man, was named locally as Colm Donlon, who came from Priorland Grove, Dundalk.
He was found with multiple stab wounds in Fair Street, Drogheda, at about 10pm on Sunday. The body was discovered by a neighbour. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.
The man's body was removed from the apartment early yesterday afternoon after State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy had carried out a preliminary examination. She later conducted a full postmortem at the Dublin City Morgue.
The results of the postmortem examination are expected to be available later today.
The suspect, was well known to the victim and was arrested after the alarm was raised on Sunday night. He was being questioned at Drogheda Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He is expected to appear before the courts in Drogheda this morning to face charges in relation to the fatal assault.
Fair Street is a well-established residential area popular with the town's doctors and consultants, who have their private practices in many of its three-storey houses.
Former mayor of Drogheda Cllr Gerald Nash said that the death "sent shockwaves around the town".
