Man dies in Limerick industrial explosion

A father of three from Ennis, Co Clare, has died after an explosion in the Vistakon plant in Limerick.

A father of three from Ennis, Co Clare, has died after an explosion in the Vistakon plant in Limerick.

The explosion, which happened just after 8.00 a.m. today, appears to have been caused by an internal gas leak.

The dead man, who is in his 40s, has not yet been named. Two injured workers were taken to St John's Hospital in Limerick city, but they were discharged shortly before lunchtime.

The Vistakon manufacturing facility, which has been based at the Plassey Technological Park on the outskirts of the city since 1995, produces contact lenses and associated products.

The plant, which employs 400, has been temporarily closed and separate investigations are being held by the Health and Safety Authority and the gardaí.
