A man (27) is critically ill after he was attacked by a gang of at least eight masked men in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry.

The attack happened at the Derryview Terrace home of Gary Jarvis and his partner, Amanada Coyle, just before midnight, on Tuesday.

The victim attempted to escape, but his attackers chased him and beat him with baseball bats.

Mr Jarvis suffered two broken legs and fractures to his skull and face in the attack in Derry's Gobnascale area.

He is in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
