Man convicted over assault of hurling star

One of four Thurles men accused of assaulting former Kilkenny hurling star, P.J. Delaney, was yesterday convicted at Clonmel Circuit court on a charge of violent disorder at Liberty Square, Thurles, on September 19th, 1999.

Philip McCarthy (35), of Cabra Court, Thurles, was found not guilty on two other charges: that of assault causing serious harm and assault causing harm to Mr Delaney.

Earlier, MCarthy's son, and co-accused, Mr Stephen McCarthy (17), of the same address, was acquitted on the direction of Judge John O'Hagan.

Mr Peter McCarthy (18), a nephew of Philip McCarthy, and of the same address, was found not guilty of all charges by the jury.

A fourth man, also named Mr Peter McCarthy (25), of Cabra Bridge, Thurles, was sentenced to 18 months after pleading guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Delaney and violent disorder in relation to the same incident.
