A man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the murder of his wife in their Co Louth home this week.

A man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the murder of his wife in their Co Louth home this week.

Jacqueline McDonagh (34) , a mother of three, was found beaten to death in her home at College Manor, Dundalk in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Michael McDonagh (33) from College Manor, Dundalk, was brought before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court this afternoon.

Det Garda Joe Ryan told the court that when he arrested and charged the defendant at 11.15pm last night, McDonagh replied: "I didn’t mean to kill her, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to kill anybody."

Judge Denis McLoughlin remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill District Court next Friday.

Following a request from defence solicitor Cahir O'Higgins, the judge granted the defendant legal aid and recommended that he be medically examined and receive any appropriate medical treatment.

A small group of the dead woman’s relatives shouted abuse at McDonagh before and after his brief court appearance.
