A CO GALWAY father has been charged with more than 100 counts of rape and other offences against one of his daughters.

The 48-year-old man denied the offences when the charges were put to him in Roscommon yesterday.

The man faces the 102 new charges in addition to almost 200 charges of raping four of his daughters.

Garda Marie Hession told Judge Geoffrey Browne at Harristown District Court in Castlerea that the defendant replied: “I didn’t do it”, when the first of the additional charges were put to him yesterday.

She said that the man replied: “I didn’t do any of it, none of them charges”, when the other charges were put to him.

The defendant was yesterday charged with 78 counts of rape, 12 counts of buggery and 12 counts of indecent assault on a named daughter between 1985 and 2000.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday.

The man was last month remanded in custody charged with 195 counts of raping four of his daughters over an 18-year period and two counts of neglect and cruelty towards a son.

His 45-year-old wife, who faces 18 charges of cruelty and neglect of her children between May 2002 and June of last year, was remanded in custody at Ennis District Court last month.

She is due to appear before Athenry District Court on Tuesday next.

The couple, who have been in custody since they were arrested at their Co Galway home on Christmas Eve, cannot be named for legal reasons.

A previous sitting in Ennis was told that all of the couple’s children were now in care.
