Man charged with murder of woman in Athy

A man has appeared at Naas District Court charged with the murder of a woman in Athy last Thursday.

A man has appeared at Naas District Court charged with the murder of a woman in Athy last Thursday.

Michael McDonald (48), Barnhill Road, Castledermot, Co Kildare, was charged with the murder of Breda Cummins (31).

He was also charged with the assault of John Lawlor.

Det Sgt Seán Boland told the court Mr McDonald was arrested at Kildare Garda station. His solicitor Paul Cunningham said his client had an alcohol problem and had not taken a drink since his arrest. He also had “mental health issues” and sought medical attention from the prison service.

Judge John Lindsay remanded Mr McDonald into custody to Cloverhill until 10.30am next Thursday.
