A 49 year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with a serious assault in Waterford at the weekend which left a man critically ill in hospital.
Martin Smith, of Closegate in Waterford city, appeared at a special sitting of Waterford District Court charged in connection with the assault of Michael Corbett (51) shortly before midnight on Saturday.
The suspect was arrested at the scene of the assault on Saturday and appeared at a special sitting of Waterford District Court shortly after 7.30pm.
The injured man suffered serious head injuries during the assault which happened shortly before midnight on Saturday after he tried to gain access to a party at an address at Barrack Street, Waterford.
He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital before being moved to Cork University Hospital early yesterday.
