A man appeared at Portumna District Court yesterday in connection with the death of a man in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, last Sunday morning.

Karlis Ruja (50), a Latvian, of Eiscir Island, Tullamore, Co Offaly, was charged with assault causing harm to Alexey Pekelman at the Coach Yard, Nenagh, on July 15th.

Det Stuart Beattie told Judge Michael Reilly he arrested the defendant outside Nenagh Garda station at 6.40pm on Wednesday before conveying him inside the station and charging and cautioning him.

Solicitor Tony O'Malley said his client would be consenting to a remand in custody to a sitting of Nenagh District Court today, where he will be making a bail application on behalf of his client.

Mr O'Malley requested that his client receive any necessary medical attention while he is custody and made an application for legal aid, which was granted.
