Man assaulted young woman

A jury has found a young man guilty of falsely imprisoning a young woman

A jury has found a young man guilty of falsely imprisoning a young woman. He was remanded in custody for sentence by Judge Frank O'Donnell at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Paul Ennis (23), a kitchen porter, single and the father of one, of Ashley Avenue, Swords and Larkhill Road, Whitehall, was found guilty of falsely imprisoning and assaulting the woman on July 11th 1997, at Merrion Square, Dublin. He had pleaded not guilty.

The unanimous jury verdicts came after a two-day trial in which the victim told how Ennis grabbed her from behind on the steps to her flat at about 4.30 a.m. He dragged her along the street with her feet off the ground while she screamed loudly. He suddenly dropped her on the ground and ran off. Gardai on duty nearby at Leinster House came to her aid. Judge O'Donnell remanded Ennis in custody for sentence on October 29th and refused an application for bail.
