Gardai arrested a 29-year-old man in Santry, Dublin, yesterday, in connection with a cocaine seizure at Dublin Airport on Thursday night, writes Tim O'Brien.

The man, an Irish national whose name has not been released, was arrested in Santry at 11.05 a.m. under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act, 1996.

He is being held at Whitehall Garda station where he may be detained for up to seven days.

The detention follows the arrest of a 22-year-old Irishwoman at the airport on Thursday night as she stepped off a flight, the last leg in a journey which is thought to have originated in Grenada in the Caribbean.

A short time after the woman was detained, gardai opened a bag and found the cocaine.

While the value of the haul depends on its purity when it would be eventually sold on the streets, the Garda Press Office said the Santry drugs unit still put the value of the seizure at about £240,000, even though the value had earlier been estimated by other sources to be about £1 million.
