A 30-year-old man was being questioned by PSNI detectives last night on suspicion of murder after a man died following an assault early yesterday in Ballynahinch, Co Down.

David Mills (47), Dundrum, Co Down, was allegedly assaulted in the Dromore Street area at about 12.40am. He was brought to hospital, but died at about 10am yesterday from his injuries. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.

Sinn Féin Assembly member Chris Hazzard said people were shocked by the killing. SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said it was “totally out of keeping with the normally peaceful nature of the town”.

Down District Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke said Mr Mills “was a larger than life character”, well liked in local community and sports circles.
