A 36-year-old married Wexford lorry driver has been found guilty at the Central Criminal Court of raping a 19-year-old woman in April 1999.
He had denied the allegation in evidence and claimed they had consensual sex. The woman, now 21, said he raped her not long after expressing contempt for "such men" who committed sexual violence against women.
She said she had a one-night-stand with him when she was 19 years old and did not know he was married. She had told him, before they had sex, that she had been raped by another man about six months prior to their meeting. He had expressed sympathy.
She met him again on the night of the incident and he asked her if she wanted to resume their relationship and she refused. They left the pub at closing time and went their separate ways.
She had walked about five minutes when his car pulled up alongside her. She said she accepted a lift because she felt safer with someone she knew.
On the way home, he pulled over to the side of the lane and raped her.
Mr Justice Paul Carney remanded him on continuing bail for sentence on December 7th next.
