Major job losses in January

January 8th: Limerick - 1,900 jobs

January 8th:Limerick - 1,900 jobs. Dell announces plans to shed 1,900 jobs over a 12-month period after deciding to move its manufacturing base to Poland.

January 13th: Dublin - 250 jobs. Dublin Bus says it will cut 250 jobs as part of a restructuring plan after what it says is a major reduction in passenger numbers.

January 14th: Dublin - 19 jobs. Music retailer Zavvi closes Blanchardstown store with the loss of 19 jobs after the firm is put into administration.

January 15th: Sligo - 30 jobs. Management at St Joseph's private hospital confirms loss of 30 jobs.

January 16th: Limerick/Cork - 300 jobs. Car components plant Kostal announces 300 job losses at its plants in Abbeyfeale and Mallow following a sharp downturn in sales.

Kerry - 120 jobs. German-owned specialist textile plant Amann announces plans to cut 120 jobs at its Tralee plant, blaming high manufacturing costs and the ongoing recession.

Westmeath - 32 jobs. Fibreglass manufacturer Taconic International announces 32 job losses in Mullingar in response to a slump in demand

January 20th: National - 322 jobs. Bus Éireann announces plans to make 322 staff redundant as part of a major restructuring of its operations to help it reach break-even this year.

Dublin - 72 jobs. The Glashaus Hotel and the Tallaght Cross Hotel close after just 18 months with the loss of 72 jobs.

January 21st: National - 400 jobs. Superquinn says it will cut 400 jobs and close its Dundalk outlet in response to a sales slump.

January 22nd: Kilkenny - 200 jobs. Galmoy Mines fast-tracks plans to shed more than 200 jobs at its mine in Kilkenny following a collapse in the value of zinc.

Dublin - 20 jobs. Microsoft announces plans for worldwide job cuts. Around 20 jobs are to be lost at its Dublin base.

National - 90 jobs. Healthcare services group United Drug says it will seek about 90 redundancies from its Irish operations as part of a group wide restructuring programme.

January 23rd: National - 145 jobs. Britvic Ireland announces plans to make 145 people redundant as part of a restructuring plan, resulting in the closure of its Cork, Ballyshannon and Waterford depots.

January 26th: National - 550 jobs. Ulster Bank Group announces plans to cut 400 banking jobs as part of a merger with former building society First Active.

January 27th: Cork - 50 jobs. Cork-based pharmaceutical company GE Healthcare says it will cut 50 jobs over the next 12 months in response to a "plateau in demand" for its products.

January 28th: Dublin - 50 jobs. Glanbia Consumer Foods says it will cut 50 jobs following the completion of a strategic review of its operations.

The majority of the jobs will go at the company’s head office in City West in Dublin.

January 29th: Limerick - 130 jobs. Castletroy Park Hotel shuts.
