A major fire at a tyre depot in Derry is being tackled by firefighters today.

A major fire at a tyre depot in Derry is being tackled by firefighters today.

A thick black cloud of smoke rose from the seat of the fire in the middle of 10,000 tyres and residents of neighbouring areas were warned by police to keep their windows and doors closed.

More than 40 firefighters worked through the night to try to bring the fire at the depot on the Pennyburn Industrial estate under control.

Police said the cause of the fire was not known and they would be carrying out an examination later to establish whether it was started deliberately.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call to a fire at the tyre depot on Buncrana Road, Derry just before 12.30am.

Spokesman Jonathan Tate said: “It is a very difficult fire to fight. The wind conditions are not in our favour this morning and it is preventing the smoke plume from being dispersed.
