Washington - The Republicans in the House of Representatives yesterday elected an unopposed Mr Bob Livingston to replace Speaker Newt Gingrich in the new Congress which meets in January, writes Joe Carroll.
The majority leader, Mr Dick Armey, fought off a challenge from two colleagues to hold on to his post. The Republicans elected as new chairman their only African-American member, the former football star, Mr J.C. Watts.
