A small plane crashed into a crowd of people near a picnic area east of Los Angeles on Sunday, killing one person and injuring 10, officials said.

The crash in San Dimas, California, about 35 miles (56 km) east of Los Angeles, happened near midday (local time) as the plane crashed along the shore of a reservoir used as a picnic area.

One person was killed and two children suffered heart attacks. Eight others were injured and airlifted from the site of the accident by helicopter, officials said.

Television images showed debris from a small plane scattered near the shore of the Puddingstone Reservoir in the Frank G. Bonelli Park, a popular recreation area.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the crash and whether the pilot had been attempting to land the plane beside the lake.

The crash site was near a local airfield.
