Lebanon said today it had arrested a group of Palestinians it blamed for launching rockets at Israeli targets from southern Lebanon in recent days.
Government sources said six Palestinians had been arrested in connection with the attacks and that the suspects had a rocket with them when arrested.
Lebanese Information Minister Mr Ghazi al-Aridi said: "It is known that the Palestinians are responsible for what has happened in the past two days, and this is no secret".
Israel has accused Syrian-backed Hizbollah guerrillas of firing missiles at Israeli targets from Lebanon and threatened retaliation if the group launched any cross-border attack.
The Israeli army said two missiles were fired at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights yesterday. Hizbollah, which has control in much of south Lebanon, denied knowledge of the incident.
Yesterday an Irish Army officer was being treated for serious injuries in hospital in Israel last night ollowing an attack by members of Hizbullah in south Lebanon.
Comdt Harry O'Connor is serving with the United Nation's Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO). He and three colleagues were patrolling the disputed area of Shebaa Farms. They were acting as international observers and were unarmed.
There was no gunfire but three of the four officers were injured. Comdt O'Connor's injuries are not life-threatening, a Defence Forces spokesman said yesterday.
