The chair of Dublin City Council traffic committee has rejected calls for the Dublin Port Tunnel to be renamed the Charles Haughey Tunnel.

Labour councillor Sean Kenny said the suggestion by Fianna Fail councillors would not have much public support.

"As evidenced by the low public turnout for the Charles Haughey funeral in Donnycarney on Friday and I do not feel there is a large public demand for naming the €750 million Dublin Port Tunnel as a commemoration to him" said Mr Kenny.

The former Lord Mayor said the proposal was "a piece of political opportunism".

The tunnel is due to be opened in autumn and Mr Kenny said the matter should be considered by Dublin City Council Traffic and Transport Strategic Policy Committee which recommends names for new infrastructure.
