A laboratory technician in St Finbarr's Hospital in Cork suffered neck and facial injuries yesterday when a two-litre bottle containing nitric acid exploded.

The technician was rushed to Cork University Hospital and was detained overnight. Her condition was said to be satisfactory.

In a statement, the Southern Health Board (SHB) said the laboratory technician was wearing protective goggles and gloves when the incident occurred.
