The music world has said goodbye Kirsty MacColl with a memorial service to the singer songwriter.

Friends and fans packed the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London to celebrate her life and work.

Ms MacColl (41) was killed in December when she was hit by a speed boat while swimming off the Mexican coast.

Opening the service the Reverend Nicholas Holtam said although Ms MacColl's death had been deeply shocking there was much to celebrate about her life.

Billy Bragg sang New England, which had become one of her best known hits.

In recent years she had become very involved in the campaign to get the US sanctions against Cuba lifted and Billy Bragg said this was typical of her spirit.

Her mother Ms Jean MacColl told the congregation that she had lost her best friend as well as her daughter but added: "Kirsty is still with us, she is still touching the hearts of all the people she loved."

Her partner Mr James Knight said: "The space left by her is bigger than the universe we live in."

The service ended with her band, which was joined by singer Holly Johnson, playing one of her tracks entitled Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim, which was typical of her witty and original style.
