Amman - Jordan's King Abdullah has approved orders to send four generals to retirement in the first changes since he assumed the throne after his father King Hussein's death, officials said yesterday.

They said the most senior army official to be retired was Maj Gen Tahseen Shurdum, a career soldier who had been tipped to become joint chief-of-staff of the armed forces. The other military chiefs who were sent to retirement were Gen Eid Rweidan, head of military intelligence, Gen Hamzeh al-Azb, head of personnel, and Gen Mohammed Abbadi, head of administration.
