A Killarney man has pleaded guilty to theft and fraud in that he "grossly overvalued" work carried out for an elderly man in a remote area of Co Kerry, and induced him to hand over cheques worth more than €54,000 over the course of a year .

John Dooley (22), Pinewood Estate, pleaded guilty to six counts when arraigned at the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee yesterday.

The offences took place between January and December 2008, and involved six cheques with amounts to the value of between €2,300 and €15,000.

The work was carried out at the home and property of Michael Kay (71) at Derrickknow, Gleninchaquin, Tuosist, Killarney.

Judge Carroll Moran said Dooley, who attended the court with his solicitor Pádraig O’Connell, would be sentenced in November.
