Teachers at Kilkenny City Vocational School have balloted for industrial action over health and safety issues and fears over the security of their jobs.

The teachers voted by 28-6 to serve notice of the action on Co Kilkenny Vocational Educational Committee (VEC) over its management of the school.

The resolution has been sent to the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) in Dublin, where it is expected to be ratified at the next national council meeting at the end of the month.

The teachers want to withdraw services for one day at Kilkenny City Vocational School, Coláiste Pobail Osraí and Ormonde College, which have around 370 students on their books.

"This has been necessitated by the failure of management to deal with issues of organisation at the school," a spokesperson for the union said.

The other major concerns voiced by the teachers are alleged health and safety issues in the Kilkenny City Vocational School and the perceived vulnerability of part-time teachers working there.

A report by an independent consultant into Kilkenny City Vocational School is the subject of High Court proceedings at present.
