Kinshasa - President Laurent Kabila has sacked his newly appointed army chief, Gen Celestine Kifwa, because of his conduct of a widening war with rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, officials said.

The commander of rebels advancing in the east and west said his forces yesterday seized the Atlantic port of Matadi. It was impossible to obtain government comment because of a power blackout which rebels said earlier was due to their capture of the country's main hydro-electric dam at Inga, near Matadi.
